Mel Gibson steps out in public

Mel Gibson has stepped out in public again for the first time since his high-profile arrest for drink-driving in July.

The actor was promoting his new film 'Apocalypto' at Fantastic Fest, a low-key festival in Austin, Texas, that celebrates new fantasy, horror and science fiction films, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It is believed that Mel, who is co-writer and director of the action-adventure movie, presented a preview of the film at the event and addressed an audience at the festival.

During a question-and-answer session, Mel reportedly criticised the war in Iraq.

Hollywood Reporter claims the star drew parallels between his film, which has a central theme of the decline of civilisation against the backdrop of the Mayan empire.

He said: 'The precursors to a civilisation that's going under are the same, time and time again.'

Mel added: 'What's human sacrifice, if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?'

The film is set for its American premiere this December.
